Professional Footballers Australia (PFA) can confirm Mustafa Amini’s intent to challenge Perth Glory’s unilateral termination of his playing contract on the basis that it was unlawful and in contravention of the playing agreement and the rules and policies which govern the employment relationship.

Upon initiating judicial proceedings against the Club, Amini’s contract will remain on foot until a final determination is made.

“Mustafa is hugely respected by his peers across the league, and we will ensure he is fully supported during this difficult time for him and his young family,” PFA Chief Executive Beau Busch said.

“Whilst we are confident of a successful resolution for Mustafa, recent seasons have seen a rise in several clubs attempting to deploy abusive practices aimed at forcing players to waive their contractual rights.

“In the absence of an effective A-Leagues governance model that ensures uniform club compliance with the Collective Bargaining Agreement, the PFA will consider alternative responses to ensure the players’ rights are respected across the league.”

The peak body of players’ associations in Australia, the Australian Athletes Alliance (AAA), and its Member Associations stand with the Australian Netball Players Association (ANPA) and support its efforts to negotiate a collective agreement that is fair to netballers and provides them dignity and a voice within their sport.

At a meeting of the AAA this week, all Australia’s player associations unanimously:

  • Recognised that Australia’s netballers are taking a stand in their fight for a fair deal.
  • Called on Netball Australia to negotiate in good faith.
  • Called on Netball Australia to provide full financial transparency and to develop a long- term growth model for the National League.
  • Supported Australia’s netballers in their campaign to become true partners in the sport via a revenue sharing model.
  • Called on all athletes in all sports to support the netballer’s #FightForFair social media campaign.
  • Committed to support and provide resources of the players’ association movement in Australia to the ANPA and netballers.

AAA General Secretary, Jacob Holmes, said it was important for the players from all codes to stick together.

“It is important for all of Australia’s players associations to unite around the ANPA in this time of need and the AAA was created for this purpose. We stand ready and willing to assist the netballers and ANPA.”

Holmes said the proposed ANPA deal would recognise the netballers and their role within the sport.

“The netballers are seeking a genuine partnership and a fair deal which they rightly deserve. Their motivation is to sustainably grow the sport, recognising the pivotal role the players have in this.”

ANPA CEO, Kathryn Harby-Williams, thanked the AAA and all member organisations for their support.

“The AAA and our fellow Member Associations are a great source of strength and solidarity for the ANPA and netballers. We thank the AAA and all Members for their support at this time.”

Professional Footballers Australia (PFA) wishes to clarify the misleading and bizarre statement issued by Brisbane Roar in relation to its member Corey Brown.

“As the club is aware, Corey has initiated judicial proceedings to dispute Brisbane Roar’s termination of his contract,” PFA Co-Chief Executive Beau Busch said.

“As a consequence of this legal action, Corey’s contract remains on foot until a final determination is made. This is something the club, deliberately or otherwise, is failing to understand.

“As the club continues to operate well below the expected standards of a professional football club, the PFA’s primary focus remains on protecting Corey’s wellbeing – something the club seems to have little regard for.”

The PFA stands in solidarity with our Ukrainian peers and the people of Ukraine and condemns the abhorrent actions of Vladimir Putin and the Russian military.

From the other side of the world, we have been inspired by the remarkable leadership shown by our peers including the English, Polish, Czech and Swedish players and numerous Federations in making their opposition, and refusal to play against Russia, clear.

We commend the action taken by Beka Mikeltadze and the Newcastle Jets players over the weekend.

Russia has forfeited its right to be part of the international sporting community and we urge FIFA and global sporting bodies to illustrate genuine leadership and take real action.

Cosmetic name changes are not enough. We support a ban until hostilities and the invasion ceases.

For far too long, football has ignored human rights abuses and must now play its part in holding Russia to account for its actions.

We will consider how we can best help and have today advised all of our members that any player wishing to undertake any form of protest on or off the pitch in solidarity with their peers, and with Ukraine, can count on the support of the PFA.

Professional Footballers Australia’s Co-Chief Executives Beau Busch and Kathryn Gill have today issued the following statement regarding allegations by players in relation to the environment in Australian women’s football, published in the Daily Telegraph:

“We are deeply concerned about the experiences highlighted by players in the media and we recognise that the decision to speak publicly would not have been made lightly.

“All players should feel safe, included and respected.

“It is critical that the sport provides a safe and inclusive workplace and, importantly, the players are supported to come forward.

“The PFA has reaffirmed all support and reporting mechanisms available to players and will continue to ensure that the full resources of the PFA are available to all current and former players.”

The PFA is aware of media reports and speculation in relation to Erik Paartalu’s absence from Indian Super League club Bengaluru FC’s pre-season training camp and wishes to clarify the situation.

Erik remains a contracted player of Bengaluru FC and is committed to fulfilling his obligations in that respect. Disappointingly, the club is currently excluding him from training and ignoring his repeated requests for arrangements to be made for his return. Accordingly, any suggestion that Erik has simply not reported for training, or that he is purposefully absent, is incorrect. The club has been reminded that it is Erik’s fundamental right as a professional footballer that he be given access to training and the opportunity to compete in official matches with his teammates.

Erik has been a loyal and valuable member of the club for several years and is disappointed with his current treatment by the club.

The PFA will continue to support Erik during this difficult period as we work towards his reinstatement.

PFA members have reported an increasing number of attacks on A-League and W-League players via social media, ranging from racial vilification to death threats against players, their team mates and family members.

The players’ position is clear; these attacks are criminal in nature and will not be tolerated.

We know the impact that this abuse and hate has on both the players and the community and how it undermines the game’s efforts to create a safe and inclusive sport.

We commend our members who have reported these matters to the PFA, their clubs and the Leagues. By doing so, they have helped highlight the growing incidence of these attacks andensured that appropriate action is taken to hold offenders accountable.

The PFA will continue to support our members and take a stand against threats, abuse and vilification and work collaboratively with Football Australia, the Leagues, the Clubs and relevant authorities to address this significant issue.

We must harness the capacity for sport to be a force for good by addressing the drivers of hate and abuse and by developing a collective solution.
