THE CONNECTICUT ASSOCIATION OF
ADULT DAY CENTERS

WELCOME to CAADC’s web site. The Connecticut Association of Adult Day Centers, CAADC, is Connecticut’s only professional organization devoted to furthering the interests of adult day service providers in the state.

ABOUT CAADC

The Connecticut Association of Adult Day Centers, Inc. is a statewide organization of adult day care providers. The association is open to proprietary and not-for-profit adult day providers. CAADC is a non-profit corporation, and represents nearly all the adult day centers in Connecticut. To view a list of our members, click on the CAADC Membership button above.

CAADC MISSION AND PURPOSE

CAADC's mission is to ensure that adult day health centers are a recognized professional service in the continuum of long-term care. CAADC achieves its mission through advocacy, development and promotion of quality standards, and member communication and education.

WHAT IS AN ADULT DAY CENTER?

Adult Day Centers offer a variety of health and social services in a protective group setting. Necessary health, personal care, and social services are provided for adults who do not need the continuous services of a nursing home or institutional setting and are able to leave their homes to come to the center. While caregivers work, do errands, or just have a day to themselves, the participants are engaged in vital social and recreational activities. These activities help them stay involved in the world and with people around them. Participants have the opportunity to meet and socialize with others and enjoy organized activities designed with their interests and abilities in mind. Participants are encouraged to try new activities and continue those they have always enjoyed.

HOW DO ADULT DAY CENTERS HELP FAMILIES?

Many families want to keep their parents, grandparents, and other loved ones at home with them. As rewarding as it is, care giving requires both time and energy. It can be an exhausting full-time job. Regular attendance at an Adult Day Center provides welcome assistance for those giving care at home. It can give family members time to meet their own needs. The professional staff at the Adult Day Center is available to listen, to advise and to reassure.

WHAT IS PROVIDED AT AN ADULT DAY CENTER?

The Social Model is designed for individuals who need supervision during the day. The Medical Model provides more extensive personal care, medical monitoring and rehabilitative services in addition to structured and stimulating activities.

Recreation: Structured activities are offered, including exercise, music, crafts, activities that stimulate thinking and problem solving, gardening, entertainment and much more.

Socialization: Participants enjoy socializing with peers, sharing and enjoying activities and programs with others.

Nursing Services: Participants may receive medication, health screening and monitoring.

Hot Meals and Snacks: Meals and snacks are provided according to nutritional needs and dietary restrictions.

Personal Care: Many centers provide assistance with showers, bathing, hare care, manicures, personal hygiene and incontinence care.

Transportation: Door-to-door transportation is provided to the center and back home again.

WHICH ADULT DAY CARE CENTER IS RIGHT FOR YOU AND YOUR FAMILY?

  1. Determine the services that would be needed.
  1. Identify Adult Day Center in your area. The Connecticut Association of Adult Day Centers can provide a list of centers in your area, call (860) 828-8653 or go to www.canpfa.org. Certified centers have been reviewed and found to be compliance with required standards for Adult Day Care in Connecticut.
  1. Contact the centers in your area. Arrange a visit and meet with the staff to determine if the center meets our needs (medical or social model, days and hours of operation, transportation, costs, eligibility requirements.)
  1. Make a checklist for your visit that includes qualities such as: a warm and welcoming environment and staff, comfortable safe furniture, staff credentials, programs and services offered.
  1. If possible, talk to others who have used the center you are considering.

Take advantage of the opportunity to experience a trial day, which is offered by many centers, to see how the participant might enjoy the day.

ADULT DAY CARE QUALITY OF LIFE

All persons have the right to a quality life. An essential part of a quality life for the elderly or chronically ill person is the opportunity for care in the least restrictive setting. Adult day services are an option in the long-term care continuum for those who want to remain in their homes.

At adult day centers, individuals receive professional services ranging from social activities and therapeutic recreation to nursing care and rehabilitation services. Adult day services are an innovative way to organize and blend traditional health and social services utilizing a group setting and an individualized plan of care.

The Connecticut Association of Adult Day Centers is authorized by the Connecticut Department of Social Services to conduct and administer a program of peer review. This is the key mechanism through which quality standards are ensured.
